Goodman Air Conditioners
From our perspective at Service First Heating & Air Conditioning, years past Goodman air conditioners were considered “builder grade systems” that were used in low bid new construction and by air conditioning companies with the lowest price. Consumer Reports ranked Goodman near the bottom of the list for reliability in a survey done in 2009.
Well, a lot has happened since then.
Goodman Acquired by Daikin
In 2012 Daikin Industries purchased Goodman. Daikin was founded in 1924 and has worldwide sales of $17 billion annually in over 150 countries.
In 2016 Daikin opened a new Daikin Texas Technology Park in Houston, Texas. At 4.2 million square feet , it is the largest HVAC building in the U.S.A., and was designed from the ground up to encourage collaboration and innovation. They also invested over $100 million in new manufacturing equipment. The new facility is ISO 9001-certified, a benchmark for quality manufacturing and management processes, as well as ISO 14001-certified, an international environmental certification. This new plant in Texas reinforced its global commitment to local, in-country manufacturing and job creation.
Legacy Issues & Recent Challenges
Consumer Reports still ranks Goodman poorly, but we believe a lot of their negative reviews are legacy issues. From personal experience, we can emphatically say that there is not one air conditioning manufacturer that hasn’t experienced substantial product failures in the past 10 years.
Higher efficiency requirements, conversion from R22 refrigerant to the environmentally friendly 410A refrigerant, variable speed motor technology and the transition from copper to aluminum in condensers and evaporation coils has wreaked havoc in the air conditioning industry. This is especially true in areas with hot, humid climates.
Goodman was not immune to these challenges or the issues that came along with them. In addressing these challenges, we have seen definite quality improvements in Goodman air conditioning systems.
